Nitin Gadkari worked for the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha and the student union Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad during his teens. He has served as the president of the Maharashtra BJP. From 1995 to 1999 Gadkari served as the Minister of Public Works Department (PWD) of the Government of Maharashtra. He constructed a series of roads, highways and flyovers across the state including the Yashwantrao Chavan Mumbai–Pune Expressway. He ensured that 98% of the total population of Maharashtra enjoyed all-weather road connectivity including more than 13,000 remote villages which had remained unconnected since independence, changing the face of Maharashtra like never before. For this, he favoured privatization for investments in infrastructure.
Further, Gadkari’s report as Chairman of National Rural Road Development Committee to the central government was accepted giving rise to the nationwide rural road connecting scheme called Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana worth Rs. 600 billion.
