In Indian politics, there are several families which are active in different political parties and find themselves at war in the election arena. Prominent among those are Rahul Gandhi vs Varun Gandhi, Vasundhara Raje Scindia Vs Jyotiaditya Scindia, Udhav Thackeray Vs Raj Thackeray, and Pankaja Munde Vs Dhananjay Munde families to name a few.
It was a shock to traditional India when then Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi’s daughter-in-Law Maneka Sanjay Gandhi left her house as a widow in the 1980s and started living separately with her young son Varun Gandhi. She started her political career with the non- Congress parties, though Indira Gandhi and Maneka’s brother-in-law Rajiv Gandhi were in Congress party. At present, Maneka is in Bharatiya Janata Party and the Union Cabinet Minister for Women and Child Development in the Government of PM Narendra Modi while Sonia Gandhi, the widow of Rajiv Gandhi and her son Rahul Gandhi are in the opposition in Congress party. Maneka’s son Varun Gandhi is also in the BJP and was the MP. These Gandhi factions don’t see eye to eye and staunchly follow political dividing lines.
The Scindias belong to the erstwhile Maratha royal ruling family of Gwalior. Rajmata Vijayaraje Scindia was a prominent leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party while her son Madhav Rao Scindia was a Union Minister in Congress Government of the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 80s. Presently, BJP’s Vasundhara Raje Scindia, sister of Madhav Rao Scindia is the Chief Minister of Rajasthan while his son Jyotiraditya Madhavrao Scindia is an MP and belongs to Congress party. The other sister of Madhav Rao Scindia is Yashodhara Raje Scindia who is Industries Minister of Madhya Pradesh in the BJP Government of CM Shivraj Singh.
In Maharashtra, the Thackerays are known for their staunch opposition to Congress party. Presently, Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray belongs to Shiv Sena while his cousin Raj Thackeray has formed Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) after leaving Shiv Sena. Both of them were mentored by the Late Balasaheb Thackeray who had formed the Shiv Sena and brought it to prominence.
The Munde’s are basically from Bharatiya Janata Party during the Late Gopinath Munde era. He nurtured the BJP at the grassroots level in Maharashtra and was the architect of the BJP- Shiv Sena alliance. Presently, his daughters Pankaja Munde and Pritam Munde are in Bharatiya Janata Party. Pankaja is the Minister of Rural Development, Women and Child Welfare in Maharashtra while Pritam is the Member of Parliament from Beed in. His nephew Dhananjay Munde also was in BJP working as the Youth Wing President in Maharashtra but later joined Nationalist Congress Party and is the member of Maharashtra Legislative Council. Politics war begins between Pankaja Munde Vs Dhananjay Munde.
Above are some of the prominent family wars in politics in India, whose members find themselves facing one another not only in elections but also in the Legislature of the States, Parliament, Government, and the Opposition.
